ONE of the curiosities of news coverage is its seemingly one-way interest direction.
Australia’s second city, Melbourne, is caught up with the tale of it own missing 21-year-old backpacker. A Croatian police statement that they are “looking for a girl and not a body” headlines in all of today’s Oz newspapers.
Britt Lapthorne, above, went missing in Dubrovnik, Croatia on September 18. In the reverse of so many tales of Europeans missing/lost/murdered tales in Oz, her brother, Darren, and father, Dale, are now in the country desperately seeking clues to what has happened to their loved one, last seen in the city’s Fuego nightclub.
Croatian police say the son of the owner of the Dubrovnik hostel where Britt was staying was released after 36 hours of questioning but was not a formal suspect.

The search for Britt is being widely covered in the Australian newspapers, radio and television but there doesn’t seem to have been much coverage in the UK or the US.
Britt’s family and friends are appealing for help in contacting backpackers/tourists who were in Dubrovnik 16th-18th September to send any photos taken in or around the Latino Club Fuego at that time.
Are you able to help us to get the word out to the British press? We have been trying to get something onto British radio, TV or newspapers but have had no success so far.
We are hoping that with your extensive contacts in the media, you may be able to help us.
Time is critical. Her family is still holding onto the hope that Britt will be found alive and well.
This situation is frightening for all Australian tourists and the greatest nightmare for all parents and all Australians would be grateful for your help.
We Thank You and hope that you can assist us.

Oi everybody, My name is Frank Milos. I study my Visions in my dreams for last 7 years, 100 percent of those are connected with reality. My wife experienced that best. For some reason I had a strange vision about a place where Britt was attacked. I hope you will review this mail and find some connections with that place in Dubrovnik. This is my vision “There was a party and Britt went out to have cigarette with some mates, somebody showed to her some wooden boxes sized of a big packet of cigarettes well hidden (not sure what was in all of them, she was surprised that they kept that in a car, and in one of them were one of those laser beams toys) Britt was playing with one and pointing towards a balcony of the night club or some private party, that balcony was close by and full of people dancing. Then she went in another building on a second entrance or exit and they said hello to old couple seating in front of they unit/house. They went up concrete stairs in that new unfinished building still in bricks inside. On the top floor she realizes that no one is there just dark, and then someone attacked her on the way down. Britt kick with her legs really strong and then I sore just dark. “ I had a vision of names” Vanessa asked Ivan Isevic for some food, he remembered well, and there was a ear-splitting Croat music playing Ivica started dancing really energetically, she told him “uR mad Ivice”
Maybe all of my information can sound like nonsense, but I really hope that you can get some clues to were to track Britt down and the people responsible for this.
Well I hope that my information will help you find Britt, if I experience any further visions I will mail you again.

Having watched the movie ‘Taken’ I hope Brit did not fall in the hands of Europe’s underground.

The 7 backpacker murders were committed by serial killer Ivan Milat.
There is no suggestion by authorities, yet, that the same fate has befallen Britt.
Jess, do you mean lack of media attention in Croatia or Australia?

I think you may have missed the point.
The implied criticisms are not of Australian media but the British and other European outlets NOT covering the case.
The issue is the lack of appeals or detail for the Britt case where it is needed in Croatia particularly and Europe generally and the past overkill coverage in Britain when events have occurred in other parts of world…including your own. The piece is in praise of the Oz media, not any form of attack.

As a friend of Britt’s I assure all of your readers that there was much more coverage in the news of the infamous “backpacker murders” by Ivan Milat in the nineties than coverage of Britt. I think that if you researched your material appropriately that you would discover that one of the problems we have encountered with both the media and the government is the lack of attention in this case.
Also, I would like to point out that when a backpacker went missing in Melbourne several months ago a massive man hunt and media campaign was launched in an attempt to locate him. Unfortunately for his family he was found drowned in the Yarra river. Let us hope Britt’s story has a happier ending.
If you continue to keep tabs on Australian media please make sure the information you put forward is correct.
