Jacques Piccard, 86, one of two pilots in the deepest ever submarine dive, has died at his Swiss home.
In 1960 Piccard and co-pilot Don Walsh took a bathysphere seven miles to the bottom of the Mariana Trench in the western Pacific.

It’s late, but better that than never. RIP, matey. If I heard a terrifying crack at 30,000 feet below the surface I’d have hightailed it back up as fast as the bathysphere could carry me, bends be blowed, but you two still went for it that extra 5,800 feet before touching down in the ooze and staying for 20 minutes. Cracks in the window and all. No-one has bettered your dive. Brave, mad - whatever you were - I salute you.
