You Decide If Gillian Gibbons Should Be Flogged
THE story so far: Gillian Gibbons has been accused of insulting Islam’s holiest prophet.
The British primary school teacher at a school in Sudan allowed pupils to name the class teddy bear Mohammed. If found guilty she will be sentenced to 40 lashes and a lengthy jail term.
Gillian Gibbons is on the front pages of the Guardian, Mirror, Telegraph, Times and the Sun.
And she’s on the Express’s over, where the paper responds to the news with a question it would like its readers to respond to: “Is it right for this British woman to be whipped?”
The Express calls it a “barbaric class of values”. And it is. In the Sudan, Gillian Gibbons will get a trial and a chance to defend herself. But in the Express, she is afforded no such thing, and it is left to the readers to decide her fate.
Should she be flogged? You decide…

Flog away, faire than Guantanamo Bay.

I nominate both of you to take her place, if she is sentenced. Be interesting to check the state of your senses of humor afterwards.

Humiliated perhaps but apparently it is not that bad, only so many lashes per day. I was not as stupid as Miss Gibbons so can safely laugh at her predicament.

Gillian Gibbons should get out real quick from Saudi Arabia! Do it anyway she can and now. There are rules in Saudi Arabia that have to observed 100%. Doesn’t matter about anyone else doing whatever. There is one rule for the area and one rule for the Westerners! Watch out!
Where is the British Govt in all this. Shouldn’t they be asking for her return. Poor woman.

I don’t think it’s a good idea for her to go to Saudi Arabia in the first place. Sudan seems bad enough.
What I don’t understand about the offence is that loads of kids are called Mohammed, and teddy bears are friendly and compassionate guardian figures. And I dion’t think they’re even mentioned in the Koran.
So I think a good Sharia lawyer will get her off anyway.
November 28th, 2007 at 12:55 am
of course she shouldn’t be flogged-
why would anybody want to work in such a place?
Isn’t it time religion was done away with as bad for the world and civilisation in general?
Good lord, there would be nothing to fight wars about any more. The whole world might become a better place.
November 28th, 2007 at 1:26 am
Obviously things are not nearly as bad as they seem.
Ms Gibbons is out of jail and on the move. Lyn and Murder have both confirmed she has been transfered from the Sudan to Saudi.
That’s good, there is a better class of public flogging there.
What chance has the poor cow got when no-one knows where she is?

7 Murder
Agree with you-why go there in the first place. The are does not deserve anyone to help out in any way. This incident is not the first one of stupidity on behalf of the Saudis. That area fobids alcohol and drugs, but have the worst problem amongst themselves. Let anyone be caught though, and it’s off with their heads.
Maybe good money - no tax - but does that matter!

Saudi Arabia is a cruel place. Most people there have no feeling towards animals or womenfolk.
Fancy putting a sheep that had just endured a long voyage, dumped on their soil, and then shoved into the boot of a car…DO NOT go to Saudi Arabia!!! Only at your own risk!
November 28th, 2007 at 6:43 am
Isn’t Gillian Gibbons entitled to the same protection afforded to the McCanns by the British Government? No worries then.
November 28th, 2007 at 9:08 am
Lyn…. she is not in Saudi, never has been. She was teaching in SUDAN.
November 28th, 2007 at 9:35 am
Of course this woman shouldn’t be flogged. She isn’t guilty of anything apart from trying to regain her youth going to live in a part of the world which should be reserved for adventurers/pioneers only. It is very barbaric in that region. I’m not saying that 54 is old - of course it’s not. But it really wasn’t fair on her family back home to give them the worry of her being in a disease-ridden forgotten part of the world with religious values which do not fit with the culture she is used to. She bit off more than she can chew and should return to the UK immediately. I bet she’ll say she wants to stay!

And Lynn - I was referring to Sudan in my post but the same goes for Saudi Arabia.
November 28th, 2007 at 9:54 am
Logic… I can’t see her wanting to stay after having had a spell in jail in Mogadishu!
I do appreciate her ‘need’ to do something good but sadly there are many people like her who see the poverty in Africa through the proverbial rose tinted glasses and expect to be welcomed with open arms by adoring locals. Not! Doesn’t work like that any more!
But of course she shouldn’t be flogged and the Foreign Office should be involved to get her out asap. The most she is guilty of is being ‘an innocent abroad’. She was silly but with the best of intentions…. may be a lesson to other middle aged women looking for ’something’.
(as a middle aged woman I can say that!!)
November 28th, 2007 at 11:22 am
and of course, when I said Mogadishu I meant Khartoum!! (maybe a tad further on from middle aged than I thought)
November 28th, 2007 at 11:32 am
Er… I thought this was a ’satirical’ site. My remarks about Sudan being bad enough, without moving on to Saudi Arabia, were ironic.
How many posters have actually been in Khartoum? I found the people there, northern Arabs and christian Nilotic southerners, very polite, hospitable and friendly to male and female westerners - though obviously there are long-standing political and cultural tensions in yet another botched British colonial legacy.
And May: the British government intervened at the beginning of the affair, which will be quickly resolved.
November 28th, 2007 at 11:41 am
Bernadette - that’s basically a load of crap:
1 Mogadishu is in a different country, over a thousand miles from Khartoum.
2 Your ignorant caricature of ‘Africa’ completely ignores the specifics of life in Khartoum.
3: the FCO has been involved from the start.
Yes, you’re ’silly with the best of intentions’. Stick to romantic fiction.
November 28th, 2007 at 11:55 am
Murder, yes I’ve been to Khartoum although many years ago I must admit… I love Africa but there are many people who approach it as if the local populace will be thrilled just to have them there. On the whole they’re not.
I lived in Africa for many years and when I went back a while ago it has changed so much.
Oh and Thea, my name’ s NOT Bernadette so do go away!

She works in a private school with the rich kids, so not so concerned about the poor. I imagine that she is quite well paid too so doesn’t need to set up a fund for her legal expenses.

So much for the religion of peace! What a bunch of idiots. I say nuke em all!

Who named any bear “Teddy” then?
Where did that come from I wonder?

I have decided to name my lavatory bowl Mohamed and instal a copy of the Koran for use instead of toilet paper.

Personally I wouldn’t go anywhere near one of those backward thinking countries for all the money in the world. Islam? You can stick that as well, in fact that goes for all religions who restrict human activities and use it as an excuse for their behavior.
Maybe they need to watch the stoning scene in Life of Brian to show them how stupid they really are. If I was any kind of liberal, free-thinking individual stuck in a country bound by such intolerance and stupidity I’d be on the first plane out of there.
November 30th, 2007 at 3:29 pm
I’m sick of hearing Muslims claim that Islam is a peaceful religion. Every day we hear about them blowing each other up, and now they have arrested someone for letting school children name at stuffed animal. It makes me sick.
I suppose if were in the middle east and wrote this same statement, I’d be up for exsiccation.
Is that your idea a peace?
Sickening

It plays like a Monty Python sketch and qould be funny if not so serious. The sooner religion is abolished the better if this is the outcome… I mean its a NAME ffs 99.9% of these so called “protestors” baying for blood couldn’t give two hoots they just want to see blood and if its a westerner all the better!!
Grow up and get over it springs to mind…
November 30th, 2007 at 5:56 pm
Lets make things absolutely clear here…….(every politicians favourite phrase at the moment) the kids, or one of them at least, named the bear….Mohammed is a popular name given to Moslem boys (I don’t know of many boys named Jesus in this country) ….if anyone REALLY wanted to cause any religious blasphemy then they would have given a pet pig the name of Mohammed, now that WOULD have been offensive!
November 30th, 2007 at 6:08 pm
Thats it ive had it wiv muslims, they ask for tolerance of their religion when in our country. So we give them what they want and they spit curry in our faces.
People need to stand up as a whole and let these “your religion means nothing but defy ours and you will be beheaded” extremists get away with calling the shots. I say we demolish these mosques that preach this hate againtst others they call a religion and ban the so called allmighty koran
