Right Charlize

‘NEWSPAPERS take great care about which stories they place next to each other.

‘I’ll be wearing black and squatting awkwardly by a wall’

So we can only assume that the juxtaposition in the Telegraph of a picture of Charlize Theron with a story headlined, “Lonely Heart Women Search For Love”, is deliberate.

The implication is that among the one in five adults using dating agencies in their search for the ideal partner is, if not Ms Theron herself, then many women like her.

“Beautiful, Oscar-winning actress seeks professional male, 25-40, N/S, for fun, friendship and maybe more. Must have own teeth.”

That would certainly explain why so many men are turning to dating agencies, but not why there are so many women scanning the personal columns.

Mary Balfour, director of two introduction agencies, said the profile of the dating agency customer had changed completely since the 1970s.

“At that time,” she said, “it was the loner and the loser who went to the marriage bureau.”

Now it’s the loner, the loser and the Oscar-winning model-turned-actress.’
