Nuclear Warning

by | 6th, September 2004

‘JUST pause for a moment, consider events in southern Russia, and then listen to a Government source suggest that fox hunting will be the ‘nuclear issue’ of the next General Election.

‘Okay, which one of you’s going to pretend to be the fox?’

Those among you who can recall the heady days of 1997 when things were only going to get better may also remember how back then hunting was a big bugbear of Tony Blair and his new Labour supporters.

They vowed to get it banned, it being the very depths of human depravity, the epitome of cruelty.

For many of us reading the papers today, hunting is no big deal but, to this Government, it’s a central issue that must be addressed.

Just listen to Sir Gerald Kaufman, a former Labour minister, who tells the Telegraph that if the Lords veto the party’s latest drive to purge the country of this sickness, the Parliamentary Act will be invoked.

This little-used act allows the government of the day to force measures past the Lords so long as a year has passed since the proposed law’s introduction.

So hunting with hounds will be banned…at some point in the future.

And the world will be a better place for it – although with fewer chickens.

Unless, of course, the Government sends out its hit squads to shoot the sly old fox in a tasteful and humane, non-headline grabbing fashion.

Or the hunters start chasing their quarry with alternatives to hounds, like big cats, tanks and suicide bombers…’
