Hammer Time

‘AT Christmas time, newspapers like to hold auctions offering things like a day out in a car with the motoring correspondent or a weekend in Iraq with a war correspondent.

”Shit! Why didn’t I just bid for the nutritionist?”

All the money is for charity, so the humble hacks can hardly refuse this yearly ordeal in humiliation.

And it is a humiliation – with just hours to go before the deadline, the Times tries to drum up some support for its first wave of lots.

Pride of place goes to a day at Westminster (and lunch) with correspondent Matthew Parris, which has already attracted a bid of £2,700.

Dinner at the Ivy with Andrew Pierce, author of the paper’s gossip column, will fetch at least £1,420 and the opportunity to feature in a Peter Brookes cartoon has also broken the £1,000 barrier.

But what of the chance to shop at Armani with style guru Tina Gaudoin? Top bid so far is £820 – for a prize that includes a champagne lunch and £500 to spend.

Or what would you pay for the chance to meet the Times nutritionist at the juice bar of One Aldwych ”to discuss all manner of foodie issues”? No more, it seems, than £255.

Which incidentally is the highest bid received so far in the Anorak auction – and that’s for a chance to empty Old Mr Anorak’s colostomy bag…’
