Burglars Blackballed

by | 14th, February 2005

‘IF London really wants to impress the visiting IOC delegation, it should show them the latest weapon in the war against crime in the capital – a large black ball.

”No ball”

The Telegraph says the robotic ball acts as a high-tech security guard.

Not only can it detect an intruder through its infra-red remote sensors, but once alerted it can summon help or even pursue the felons.

“It is capable of travelling at 20mph, somewhat faster than a human,” the paper explains. “Even worse for intruders, the robot ball can still give chase over mud, snow and water.”

Not that there is ever mud, snow or water on the ground in London – at least not while the IOC delegation is in the city.

Nor indeed is there any crime, but if there were Tory MP Patrick Mercer thinks the Swedish-designed ball could have great potential.

“It would be interesting to see whether the ball had used grossly disproportionate force or whether it would be deemed reasonable,” he said (in what passes for a joke among MPs).

IOC members should know, however, that in Britain the cricket bat is the only weapon that can be used against burglars. If there were any. Which there aren’t.’
