The Years Of Our Lords

‘AH, Tony Blair’s great meritocracy. You have to earn respect and honour in Tony’s brave new world.

Lord Euan was glad he’d bought dad that new pair of boxers for his birthday

And since you’ve earned enough to give his party a large wad of cash, Tony may see fit to give you the respect you crave in the form of a title.

The Times has done the sums – one in ten of the life peers created by Tony since he became Prime Minister is a Labour party donor.

And the happy result is that Labour is now the largest party in the Lords for the first time ever.

None of this is to say, of course, that the 25 good men and women who have seen fit to give Tony their cash are not able peers.

It might just be that their largesse is a sign of how keen they are to support the political process.

It’s surely just a happy coincidence that they get a nice ermine jacket and a title out of it…’
