‘HOW times have changed. Nowadays George Best would just have been another casual drinker, rather than the booze celebre.

George did nothing by halves

And would we ever have believed that journalists would moan about plans for 24-hour drinking when Grub Street was in its gin-soaked prime?

Nowadays we have the Telegraph commissioning a YouGov poll and finding that only one in four of us supports the new licensing laws.

Given our nation’s love of drinking, presumably the other 75 per cent are either members of private drinking clubs, home brewers or too paralytic to understand the question being put to them…’
