Be warned. The years have not been overly kind to the leader of worldwide Christianity.

And there he is. Know that he lives in Italy. He’s got assisted hair, not much height and a neat line in little shiny shoes. He also goes under the name Silvio Berlusconi.

At the start of his campaign to remain as Italy’s secular leader in April’s general election, Berlusconi outlines his manifesto become spiritual leader, too, as reported by the Telegraph.

‘I am the Jesus Christ of politics,’ he says. ‘I am a patient victim, I put up with everyone, I sacrifice myself for everyone.”

But not everyone sees the likeness. There are, as ever there were, doubters.

It’s a ‘grotesque comparison’ says Marco Rizzo, a communist parliamentarian.

“Silvio Berlusconi has as usual with his usual limited sense compared himself to Jesus Christ,’ said Giuseppe Giulietti, an opposition Left MP.

Someone billed as a senior Catholic Church official says: ‘I know he will say he was speaking in jest but such things should not be spoken of in jest.’

Indeed, as we have seen of late, religion and comedy are uneasy bedfellows – even if Berlusconi has vowed to remain chaste until the election…’
