Terrorist Bingo

by | 11th, August 2006

“10/8. Was this going to be the next date in the calendar of terror?” asks this morning’s Independent.

“Five planes and the plot to commit Britain’s 9/11,” says the front page of the Times.

The 7/7 bombings in London last year, the 11/3 train bombings in Madrid the year before…

We are, it seems, in the middle of a global game of terrorist bingo and Osama bin Laden is getting closer and closer to shouting “bayt!”

Either that or it is an apocalyptic game of dominoes and each terror cell has picked up its deadly set of dates at some training camp in Tora Bora.

What is certain is that had this latest plot succeeded – on whatever grim day it was due to have taken place – it would have dwarfed even the attacks on the World Trade Center.

As the Guardian headline (a quote from the Metropolitan police deputy’s commissioner) says, the aim was “to commit mass murder on an unimaginable scale”.

British-born suicide bombers were planning to blow up 12 passenger jets above five US cities using liquid explosives disguised as bottles of soft drinks and iPods as detonators.

However, their movements were being monitored by the security services, who yesterday moved to arrest the main players and break up the plot.

However, the Guardian says police are still hunting others thought to be involved in the plot, while there is also a fear that other jihadists may now attack sooner than planned for fear of being informed on.

So the message is for all of us to be on our guard – and report anyone you see wandering around with an iPod to his ears and a bottle of Jihad Juice in his hands…
