According to a financial report filed with the Federal Election Commission, the Democrat’s campaign committee paid for Edwards to have his hair cut by celebrity stylist Joseph Torrenueva of Beverly Hills.

The cost of each haircut was $400.

As Salon reports, Torrenueva, normally charges $150 for men. But he charged extra for the inconvenience of meeting Edwards at another location. (Other stylists at the same salon charge as little as $60 or $75 for a cut.)

“I do cut his hair and I have cut it for quite a while,” Torrenueva says. ”We’ve been friends a long time.”

Edwards By Design

And Edwards knows the value of looking clean cut. As the NY Times reports, campaign records revels Edwards’ campaign paid $248 on March 1 to the Designworks Salon in Dubuque.

The spa’s website tells us: “When you leave our salon you’ll feel like a new person…refreshed, renewed and revitalized.”

In “We consider hair design a fine art!” spa-goers are told:
Whether it’s maintaining your current style or taking a bold step onto the cutting edge of fashion, you can rest assured in knowing your stylist is your personal partner helping to create or enhance your unique individual style.

Once you’ve agreed on the hair style and before the precision cut begins, you’ll be treated to an aromatic stress relieving scalp massage, and a luxurious shampoo scalp massage to help you relax, unwind and enjoy the journey. To top it off, ask for a quick cosmetic touch-up…an application of the season’s new shade of lipstick and blush will allow you to greet the world with renewed anticipation.”

Nothing wrong with this. Men vote, women vote. Men who want to behave like women vote. Chauvenists vote.

And Edwards is up against Hillary Clinton, a woman who may care to tap Edwards for grooming tips.

Tony’s Tresses

Of course, this I nothing new to even we yellow-toothed Britishers. As of July 2005, Tony Blair has spent more than £1,800 of taxpayers’ money on cosmetics and make-up artists since coming into office in 1997.

And there is Irish premier Bertie Ahern’s look. In Juine 2005, the Independent reported that Mr Ahern had spent £19,000 on make-up in the past year alone. Since 1997 Mr Ahern’s appearance had cost taxpayers 167,000 euros (£115,895).

Readers may also note how Blair has seen off three less then hirsute Tory leaders – William Hague, Michael Howard and Ian Duncan Smith.

The BBC cites research from the early 1990s that found that the proportion of bald men making it to elected office in the US was four times less than the number of follicularly challenged males in the population at large.

And how the last time a bald politician was elected to Number 10 was Winston Churchill in 1951 – and he was up against the equally receded Clement Attlee.

One other thing to note is that none of the Presidential hopefuls sports facial hair.

Might it be time one of them did? You know, to strand out from the crowd…
