The Falklands Are Just Like Iraq: Only The Other Way Around

MARGARET Thatcher remembers The Falkands.  (Was it a conflict or a war?) And how does that battle stack up against Iraq?

“There are in a sense no final victories,” she said, “for the struggle against evil in the world is never ending. Tyranny and violence wear many masks. Yet from victory in the Falklands we can all today draw hope and strength.”

Good on her, I think, to cast about for anything that will give hope and strength to serving soldiers. But in raising that particular instance, she suggests an unfortunate collateral point.

Except in the respect that both wars were undeclared, Iraq contrasts, rather than compares with, the Falklands. The Falklands, like Iraq, featured the unprovoked and illegal invasion of sovereign territory – but, in that case, we were on the other side.
