About Sealand: On Christmas Eve 1966, retired army Major Paddy Roy Bates and his family moved to the former anti aircraft platform Roughs Tower about 7 miles off the eastern coast of England to operate his pirate radio station Radio Essex from beyond the boundary of the U K’s territorial water.
Bates decided to stay on the 5,920-square-foot-platform and proclaimed the artificial island to be the sovereign Principality of Sealand on 2 September 1967. He bestowed upon himself the title of “HRH Prince Roy of Sealand” and transformed the former sea fort into a luxurious palace.
Prince Roy and his family fought off the British navy in 1968, fought for Sealand’s sovereignty in court and fought off mercenaries who tried to take over the micro-nation in 1978. The Principality of Sealand even survived a disastrous fire in 2006.
Today, Prince Roy’s son Michael is the head of the state.
The Principality of Sealand celebrates its 40th anniversary as a sovereign nation in 2007 and a big-budget movie about the history of Sealand is now in-developement at Warner Brothers.
