The Anorak Awards: Desmond’s Daily Express Picks Up Irony Gong
AND the Anorak Award for Most Ironic headline of the decade goes to… the Daily Express for this gem:
“SWEARING NOW THE BLIGHT OF BRITAIN – How TV is degrading our public life.”
Brought to you by the Daily Express, owned by Richard Desmond, driving force of the TVX – the Fantasy Channel porn shows, who on taking residence in his new paper’s new office opined:
“I thought, ‘Shall I make it half the size?’ and then I thought, ‘Fuck it,'” the press baron says, by way of explaining his choice of office design.
His newspaper brought from:
“…old Etonian, anti-Semitic, fucking wankers”
Who said of Tony Blair:
“I am not political. The readers hate him [Blair]. It’s not that they have turned against him, they fucking hate him”
Tony’s a politician:
“The problem is, no one fucking believes them [politicians].”
As Desmond once said:
“I like to turn a great story into a great-selling front cover. But it’s only my opinion. I could be f***ing the whole thing up.”
No shit.
