Daily Mail Taken In By Big Polar Bear Ice Lie, Again

by | 26th, January 2009

THE Daily Mail features “this 2007 picture of polar bears stranded on eroded ice floes has become the iconic image of the impact of climate change on the Arctic creatures”.

Yeah, that picture – the one taken by the Australian Amanda Byrd in August, when the sun shines and ice, er, melts…

And now, as Bob Parks notes the New York Times is using the picture to illustrate “The Presidential Candidates on Climate Change”.

The polar bear is helpless:

‘Helpless’ is a strange way to describe a half-tonne predator. As the BBC website notes: ‘The polar bear is the largest land carnivore and has a reputation as the only animal that actively hunts humans.’
