Extinct Bird Found And Eaten

by | 20th, February 2009

THE rare Worcester’s buttonquail (Turnix worcesteri), aka the Philippines quail, is captured by a bird hunter in Caraballo.

The bird was thought to be extinct. But it isn’t. Although now it might be because the bird was photographed and sold to a poultry market.

The Turnix worcesteri species, listed as “data deficient” on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s 2008 Red List, was believed extinct.

Says Michael Lu, Wild Bird Club of the Philippines President:

“What if this was the last of its species?”

Well, then it should be sold as a delicacy, both rare and delicious…
