Barack Obama Pulls Brad Pitt; Brown Settles For Gail Trimble.

IAIN Martin tells Telegraph readers:

President Obama has been rudeness personified towards Britain this week. His handling of the visit of the Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, to Washington was appalling. First Brown wasn’t granted a press conference with flags, then one was hastily arranged in the Oval office after the Brits had to beg.

This is Gordon Brown, the unelected leader of a democracy, a man who is clinging on to power afraid to go to the polls? And as for flags

But what’s this? Something, suddenly, seems to have made the Obama White House perk up and start to take an interest in the Brits. The Queen has invited the President to tea when he’s here for the G20 in April. And he’s in through the front door of Buckingham Palace faster than a Harley Davidson roaring along Route 66.

That would be Obama meeting a fellow head of State? Maybe he’s coming to collect? The Croydonian ponders:

Not, however, our Uncle Sam:

Asked by Lord Laird

To ask Her Majesty’s Government how much they owe to the government of the United States for debts incurred in and around the First World War; and what are the arrangements for repayment.

The Financial Services Secretary to the Treasury (Lord Myners): At the end of the First World War the United Kingdom debt owed to the United States amounted to around £850 million. Repayments of the debt were made between 1923 and 1931. In 1931 President Hoover of the United States proposed a one-year moratorium on all war debts, which allowed extensive international discussions on the general problems of debt repayment to be held. However no satisfactory agreement was reached. In the absence of such an agreement no payments have been made to, or received from, other nationals since 1934.

Says TC:

Let’s say that Obama decides to foreclose and wants interest at say 5%. I make the debt on that basis £33,007,780,000. Maybe he’ll send over some repo men, although I doubt their ability to find anything worth taking.

Of course, as Mr Brown continues to tell everyone who will listen – apart from Obama, whose not – the Americans started the recession.

No, no don’t feel sorry for Brown about Obama’s amateurism. The real pain he feels is not meeting Brad Pitt:

“Pitt’s superpowers are such that he and President Barack Obama pulled off an improbably secret meeting, White House spokesman Thomas F. Vietor confirmed. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was not immune to his charms. Praising Pitt for his work to rebuild New Orleans’ hurricane-ravaged 9th Ward, she even allowed that meeting him affords her “bragging rights to my children and my grandchildren — a real treat for me as well.”

And Brown seethes. Still, he did get to meet Gail Trimble…
