Protestor Tosses Shoe At Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Cane Missing

by | 8th, March 2009

URMIA News, an Iranian website, reports that Iran’s president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has been on the receiving end of a thrown shoe.

Like the shoe thrown at China’s Prime Minister Wen Jiabao as he spoke at Cambridge University.

Like the shoe tossed at George Bush by Muntader al-Zaidi, the new England First XI pie chucker.

Is it the same shoe?

Ben Macintyre told Times readers:

In Arab culture, hitting someone with a shoe is an extreme form of insult.

It Iran, hitting someone in the face with shoe means you’re a wicked bloke. The harder you hit them the more you like them. If Barack Obama is looking for a gift to give Ahmadinejad, he could do mush worse than swap Now That’s What I Call Music Volumes 21 – 25 for a pair of clogs.

Cultural nuance is all.

A hat was also thrown in Ahmadinejad’s direction. A hat and a shoe…  Another shoe was thrown at Ahmadinejad during a students’ demo at Tehran’s Amir Kabir university in 2006.

Two shows and a hat. Anyone got a cane?

PS – Did we ever throw his Man At Ahmadinejad suits back?
