Where’s the wanker in the black?

by | 9th, March 2009

According to new figures announced by the Football Association, 7,000 football referees are quitting every season because of abuse on the pitch and from the touchlines.

The FA also claims that in some parts of the country, one fifth of games are played without any qualified match official.

Britain has a fine heritage of abusing referees – “The referee’s a wanker!” is a popular refrain heard in every league ground, as is “Who’s the wanker in the black?” (a rhetorical question, wethinks) – so all new refs must know what they are getting into when they take the field.

Anorak wonders, who the hell would want to be a ref in the first place?
