The Least Popular Man In New Zealand Closes Town’s Last Pub

by | 11th, June 2009

drinking-banIN Kumara, New Zealand, (pop. 405) the local Liquor Licensing Authority has rescinded the licence of Empire Hotel publican Peter Jenkinson.

There is now nowhere to buy an alcoholic beverage in Kumara.

And why did the pub shut? Well, thanks to local “woodturner” Carey Dillon’s campaign.

Mr Dillon’s shop and home are across the road from the Empire. And that upset him. So he filmed videos showing patrons drinking and smoking on the street outside the pub. And he sent them to the Authority.

John MacLennan, who is applying for a new licence for the pub, said Mr Dillon could be seen “running round with his video camera” after midnight on some nights.

Sticking up for people’s right to live in peace and enjoy privacy by, er, filming them on a wooden camera…
