Alesha Dixon Is Strictly’s Ellen Degeneres

by | 21st, September 2009

65267901ALESHA Dixon, is not a real judge, just as Strictly Come Dancing is not a real dance contest. Dixon is the show’s totty, there to give better arms, breasts and neck than Arlene Phillips, the judge who dispensed wisdom with a wattle.

Dixon was meant to be the show’s answer to the X Factor’s weepy Cheryl Cole, who was added to that show’s magistrate’s panel not in place of the older Dannii Minogue but in addition, offering viewers an advertorial for before and after plastic surgery.

But things are not working out for Dixon, who has missed becoming the show’s Cheryl to be this season’s John Sergeant, or the X Factor’s Chico of any number of hampless but amusing acts that make these show’s bearable.

But the press miss the point. Hapless Dixon should embrace her awfulness at front-line pretend judging and play up to it. We will love her and demand more. But the fear is that Dixon will battle on in the mistaken belief that a reality TV show featuring celebs – only two of whom are more recognisable than their dance partners – is real. It’s not. It’s telly. And on the telly we love an entertaining loser.

The media reacts:

Strictly fans turn on Alesha – Mail front page

Stricly Exclusive: Alesha: I won’t quit – Daily Mirror

This news is equipped with a picture of Alesha Dixon possessed of a look Joan of Arc would have described as “over the top”.

Alesh’s strictly boring, bring back Arlene – Daily Express

Alesha Dixon is not blonde, and so to reassure Express readers that the word has not gone any madder, the front page also features Princess Diana, who though dead remains blonde in perpetuity.

It’s clear that the potential for comedy looms large and promising. Says Dixon:

“Obviously Arlene was a big part of the show for a long time. But my job is not to replace Arlene. My job is to provide a perspective that was maybe missing before and that is the understanding of the performance aspects and of just how tough it is to perform to the standards the viewers expect. Having been through the Strictly experience I can relate to what they are going through.”

Strictly is tuning into a parody. Comedy is all, which is why American Idol’s newest judge is Ellen Degeneres, appearing on Cowell’s other vehicle to entertain:

Two shows in, and the audience is up in arms. Miss Dixon’s comments were generalized – “You always bring the spirit to the dance” – or bizarre – “He’s wearing pink”.

Come on, Alesha, grab the nettle in the hand fame has dealt you and become the loveable fool we all love, mocking the reality shows for what they are: an escape from reality…
