Nutt And The Call For Cocaine To Be New Gold Standard

by | 4th, November 2009

SCIENCE Nutt 122332PROFESSOR David Nutt, has been sacked as the Government’s chief advisor on drugs’ misuse policy for saying that booze is worse for you than LSD and hash.

“Alcohol ranks as the fifth most harmful drug after heroin, cocaine, barbiturates and methadone. Tobacco is ranked ninth. Cannabis, LSD and ecstasy, while harmful, are ranked lower at 11, 14 and 18 respectively.”

Time to put LSD in cigarettes in place of tobacco? Nutt is a victim of nominative determinism:

“The home secretary has asked Professor Nutt to resign as chair of the ACMD [Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs]. In a letter he [Alan Johnson] expressed surprise and disappointment over Professor Nutt’s comments which damage efforts to give the public clear messages about the dangers of drugs.

“We remain determined to crack down on all illegal substances and minimise their harm to health and society as a whole.”

Mr Nutt responds:

“I think it’s frankly fatally flawed. I think it should be re-formed with a new structure with a much clearer demarcation of the reporting lines. I don’t think it should report to a single minister, but to parliament or a panel of ministers.

“We should have a remodelled ACMD along the lines of the Bank of England, which has responsibility for making these decisions outside of government, just as happened with interest rates.”

Drugs. Bank of England. Is cocaine the new gold standard?
