Scare Stories: Killer Hot Dogs

by | 22nd, February 2010

sausagesMEDIA Scare Story of The Day brings you the Choke-Proof Hotdog.

The American Academy of Pediatrics says hotdogs need a warning label. Says Gary Smith, director of the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus:

“If you were to take the best engineers in the world and try to design the perfect plug for a child’s airway, it would be a hot dog. I’m a pediatric emergency doctor, and to try to get them out once they’re wedged in, it’s almost impossible.”

It’s the plastic packaging right? Smith makes a good pioint, but has he tried to remove a a folding umbrella from a child’s windpipe?

“The best way to protect kids is to design these risks out of existence.”

Or design kids with bigger airways?
