Haiti Gives Naomi Campbell’s T-Shirts, X Factor Hits And Lohan’s Leggings As Celebs Move On To Chile

haiti1ANGELINA Jolie was in Haiti, looking at the children. (Got anything to go with these?) Kris Allen is in Haiti reprising the role of Jill Whelan in Airplane. Alexandra Burke is taking her X Factor impression of Sol Campbell in Dutch karaoke club to Haiti. And Lindsay Lohan is selling leggings for Haiti. And Joe McElderry finally has his number one, for Haiti.

Haiti is hot, right now in showbiz circles. In other news, Naomi Campbell has organised a fashion show and worked a ‘pop-up shop’ selling Fashion for Relief t-shirts designed by Dame Vivienne Westwood.

Disaster relief aide used to be the work of dowagers and politicians. Were a politician to advise us to buy T-shirts to help Haiti – and not the branded ones made by the locals in sweat shops before the earthquake – would the media react with praise?

Could Haiti have given Gordon and Sarah Brown the number one hit they crave? Can David Cameron take loadsa cocaine and only see his stock rise?

kingofcomedyNow the media genuflects to the celebrity and asks them for advice. If Bono were a politician, instead of Mr G9, he would represent the constituency of Ham. But he gets way with being rich and preachy. The popstar has no need to be a politician and fear being exposed as inconsistent.

Tony Blair spotted this and set about becoming the closest thing to a popstar Westminster has had – a blend of PR-spin, contradictions, wealth, self-aggrandizement, non-denial denials, preaching, pouting and grandstanding. He even did the old rockers schtick of finding god.

Modern politics is not showbiz for ugly people, it is the warm-up act for the real stars. Gordon Brown and the politicians are Rupert Pupkin peering into the starry showbiz vehicle and desperately trying to climb in. And the celebs are on their own bandwagon – first stop Haiti.

Next stop Chile…
