The US Version Of Spaced Really Was This Dire: Video Evidence

by | 4th, March 2010

ONE of more dent British sitcom of the past decade was Spaced. Jessica Hynes played Daisy, a grown up, self-aware Scoobie Doo Thelma to Simon’s Pegg’s affable slacker. To fans, the show was the equivalent to smoking the remains of a hash spliff – a fuggy, comforting and reliable raw hit of last resort.

Then it went to the US, And after one show it has been canned. Want to know why? Look at the video. That’s why.

Before you sneer at the Yanks – realise that while the UK created Spaced, the vastly superior US writers have given us Seinfeld, Curb Your Enthusiam, Frasier, Larry Sanders, Seinfeld, Roseanne and Cheers. Sure they produce a load of dross too, but when they shine the US sitcoms are pithy, relevant and can touch the viewer.

Which might explain why the American are arrogant enough to try to rewrite the British original and not just lazily slap it on the telly – like we do with all of the good American stuff…
