DOUBLE child killer, Soham’s Ian Huntley, 36, was taken to hospital after his throat was slashed by another prisoner at Durham’s Supermax jail Frankland.

Prison Inspectors have already raised serious concerns about violence in the jail which holds some of the UK’s top Category A terrorists and serious offenders.

Huntley, 36 was under heavy guard at a hospital outside the jail where he is serving two life sentences for murdering schoolgirls Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman.

Ian Huntley – slashed, scalded and three suicide bids

School caretaker Huntley is serving the double life sentence for killing the schoolgirl chums who were both 10, after they vanished from their homes in Soham, Cambridgeshire, in August 2002. He was jailed in December 2003 with a minimum term of 40 years.

A Prison Service spokesman said: “A prisoner at HMP Frankland was assaulted by another prisoner at about 3.25pm on Sunday 21 March. The prisoner was taken to outside hospital for treatment. His condition is not thought to be life-threatening.”

First to re-write it’s Front Page with a Press Association announcement and break the news Huntley was back inside Frankland was the provincial newspaper The Rugby Advertiser (good for it) with:

‘Soham murderer Ian Huntley is back in prison after an attack by a fellow prisoner left him needing hospital treatment.’

Earlier, the tabloid feeding frenzy was in full swing. The Daily Mirror has more and says with customary tautology:

‘The hated child killer was said to be petrified after being viciously attacked in jail by another inmate using a razor blade attached to a toothbrush.

‘Huntley, 35, was slashed across the throat – the blade missing his jugular vein by barely an inch.

A source said: β€œHe’s lucky to be alive. It was a savage assault.”’

Over in the a Daily Mail there is need to tell the public of blood. Once again the Deep Throat “source” appears:

“Guards at the ultra-high security jail in County Durham were alerted by screams at 3.25pm. They found Huntley….lying in a pool of blood. His throat had been deeply cut and officers believed at first that he would not survive.”

Not so:

“His throat had been deeply cut and officers believed at first that he would not survive. He was rushed to an outside hospital where doctors say he is expected to pull through. A prison source said: ‘It was horrific. There was blood everywhere. It was the worst thing I have ever seen. I thought there was no way he could survive.'”

The The Sun’s favoured monster line appears again:

“Huntley needed emergency surgery yesterday after another lag slashed his throat. Prison officers found the monster lying in a pool of blood – and at first thought he was dead.

“Huntley, 36, serving life for the murder of ten-year-olds Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman in Soham, Cambs, in 2002, was just two millimetres from death.

“A source said: ‘If the cut had been a couple of millimetres deeper and wider, Huntley would have bled to death before he got to hospital. Thanks to swift action by prison staff and a dedicated NHS team of surgeons and nurses he is going to live. But he has had a very narrow squeak.'”

The Guardian briefs on the incident and then chronicles the tortured prison life which Huntley has had to survive.

‘Huntley was convicted of murdering Holly and Jessica in August 2002. He was jailed for life with a minimum term of 40 years.

The Guardian adds:

In September 2005 he was scalded with boiling water by another inmate at the high-security Wakefield prison, in West Yorkshire… He was left severely scalded after rapist Paul Marshall, 35, threw the water over him.

The following year
Huntley was held at knifepoint by another inmate at Wakefield after being ambushed on his way back to his cell following a meal.

Huntley has made three suicide attempts while in jail.

The Ministry of Justice has not said if an investigation into the assault has been launched.

Meanwhile, under a false identity in another, unknown, UK prison, Jon Venables, 27, joint killer of two-year-old James Bulger in 1993 when he was ten, waits for a Parole Board hearing on his life-licence recall, for unspecified reasons.

No charges have been brought.
