Julie Andrews’ Comback Buried By Tabloids (Photos)

JULIE Andrews is on stage at London’s 02 centre. And the news is that the tabloids cannot agree on even the most rudimentary facts:

Daily Express: “Dame Julie Andrews delighted her legion of fans with one-off concert full of her favourite tunes…

There were “standing ovations”.

The Sun: “FURY OVER TWO-SONG JULIE GIG”

Julie Andrews left fans heartbroken after singing just two songs at her comeback concert…”

We learn that “hundreds stormed out”…

Julie is invited to sing “Bone Idleweiss” and “Mime Every Mountain”

In her defence:

Dame Julie, 74, repeatedly warned in the lead-up to the gig at London’s 02 arena that her voice had never recovered from a botched throat operation in 1997.

Or as the Mail’s Vincent Graff says:

It was billed as Julie Andrews’ great comeback with devoted fans paying £100 a ticket. Shame no one told them she can’t sing any more

Unless you read the Sun. But even the simplest fact is in dispute:

The Sun’s Lynsey Haywood:

Audience members had paid up to £140 each to see the musical legend at her first show in Britain in 30 years…

Mail: “…given that the cheapest tickets cost £61 and the posh ones at the front are £106 each

At least Mark Shenton was there:

The audience regularly got up out of their seats throughout the show thereafter, though sadly not so often in gratitude as to make an early exit – I’ve seldom seen so many walkouts during the course of a show, and the pace only accelerated in the second act. Not since an arena stage production of Ben Hur last year staged a series of intentional chariot crashes here have I witnessed such an unintentional pile-up of car-crash musical theatre.

More facts to follow…
