DERRICK Bird, 52, of Rowrah near Frizington, is dead. He worked as a taxi driver. He drove a grey or silver Citreon Picasso.

He shot dead a colleague called Darren Rewcastle, in Whitehaven, Seascale and Egremont. He then went for a drive. He shot at will. Twelve people are dead. Twenty-five others are injured, three critically and five seriously.

Mr Bird’s body was found in Boot in the Lake District. His former lover Linda Mills will talk to the media.

Ryan Dempsey, a neighbour, had known Bird since he was 10.

“He was a very easygoing sort of fellow; never walked past without saying hello. The last time I saw him was last night or the night before, and he was just as happy as before. He waved through the window, nodded and smiled, and the next thing I hear is this tragedy.”

James Campbell, says:

“He was a good neighbour, I can’t say much more about him. He was always pleasant and never caused any problems as a neighbour. He always spoke if you met him outside and never was in any trouble that I know of.”
