Roy Whiting And Sarah Payne: Speaking On Behalf Of A Murdered Child
ROY Whiting killed and raped eight-year-old Sarah Payne. High Court judge Sir Peregrine Simon has reduced his minimum sentence form 50 years to 40 years. The media is aghast.
Whiting could apply for parole when he is 82.
The Sun calls it an “INSULT TO SARAH”.
Having been murdered, the Sun is worried that Sarah Payne has now been insulted. Only was this an insult?
Says Mr Justice Simon in court:
“I invite everyone present in court, before we go about our daily business, to pause and for a moment remember Sarah Payne who would now be 18 if she had not been murdered, and reflect the grave loss her death has caused to her family and others who loved her.”
The Express thunders:

Slashed? When he is in his 80s, Whiting gets to ask for parole, if he is alive and wants to.
The Express has an opinion:
The truth is that there was nothing disproportionate about the original sentence. In the lamentable absence of the death penalty then at the very least life should be guaranteed to mean life for this vile specimen of humanity.
The Mirror has a view:
We understand the anguish of Sarah’s campaigning mother, Sara, but it will prove a hollow victory for Whiting. We’re confident the beast will spend the rest of his miserable life behind bars.
Sara Payne, Sarah Payne’s mother, is “outraged”, says the Star. What she says is:
“As long as it was 50 years he could not be near a child or hurt them. It sent a message to the world. There is no parole date for the family. The only fair sentence for him is life meaning life, so he will die in prison.”
She said:

She also says, this time in the Mirror:
“Clearly the family is disappointed the tariff has been reduced but he will be in his 80s before he is eligible to be considered for parole. It could have been a lot worse. He is in prison now and he can’t hurt children there.”
But the Sun hears something different:
A JUDGE’S decision to slash the jail term of Sarah Payne’s killer was yesterday blasted by the little girl’s mother and her fellow child protection campaigners.
