Derrick Bird: Burying David Bird And Gawping At The Bereaved

by | 15th, June 2010

DERRICK Bird: In Cumbria, David Bird has been buried. Derrick Bird’s twin brother has bene laid to rest. And the papers are full of images of the mourners.

Do we stare at the bereaved as they stand by the new graves of Derrick Bird’s victims? We’ve got photos of the funerals. But what can be gained from seeing people mourn? You don’t feel anything, unless you are directly affected. You just look. Don’t you?

The Express captions an emotive image:

Private people thrust into the limelight, their grief on show.

Derrick Brid’s son, Graeme, 28, and his wife, Victoria, were there to bury David Bird.

David Bird was the victim the Star said died in a struggle with an armed Derrick Bird, possibly. Or as the Mirror puts it, no less tastefully:

David was his brother’s first victim when he burst into his Lamplugh home in the early hours, blasted down his bedroom door with a shotgun, then shot him dead.

Journal Live: “Derrick Bird’s mum plans letters to families”

Mary Bird has two dead sons. Derrick bird murdered his twin David. Mary Bird was unable to attend the funeral.

Says the Rev Jim Marshall:

“She said she’d been thinking it over and asked me to help compose letters to every one of the families who were bereaved.”

David Bird’s three daughters saying after the killings their father’s only mistake was helping his brother, they now have no animosity.

David Bird’s daughters speak:

“Not only were you one in a million, but more like one in a billion. No one will ever know a character quite like you again. You were quirky, hilarious, cheeky and downright cute.
“You always showed us girls great affection, like at Easter when you used to eat the back half of our Easter eggs and then wrap it back up so we’d never know.”

In the car park at Hatfield and Stainforth Station in Doncaster, a woman is being fired at by a figure with an airgun. She is unhurt.

The frightening gun attack came the day before laws regulating firearms were back in the public eye, after taxi driver Derrick Bird killed 12 people in Cumbria, injuring another 25, before turning his gun on himself.

Never again?

Doctors have agreed to breach their duty of medical confidentiality to patients who own guns if they fear they have become so seriously mentally ill they may use their weapons on themselves or the public, the Guardian has learned.

And how is that judged, bearing in mind doctors like to dish out happy pills?
