Kyron Horman: Terri Horman Hires Stephen Houze And The Police Recruit The Media

KYRON Horman: Anorak’s at-a-glance look at the missing seven-year-old in the media: Terri Moulton Horman’s lawyer; dogs are not called in; and the police use the media as bait…

The media and police are in cahoots:

Kyron Horman’s family spoke to the media this morning.

But not all of them were there:

The missing boy’s father, Kaine Horman, and mother, Desiree Young, invited a group of Portland news organizations to Brooks Hill Historic Church across from Skyline School. Horman said he and Young would talk about the search for Kyron.

He said he would take a short list of questions from each news organization, review them with investigators, then respond later today after a short break

The police need the media. The police seem desperate. Not at that meeting was Terri Moulton Horman. Estranged from Kaine Horman, her husband, and the subject of a whispering campaign, she’s got a lawyer called Stephen Houze.

* Houze works on “a wide spectrum of serious criminal matters,” including “death penalty defenses,” according to his website.

Who’s Houze?

Houze is famous for representing NBA star Damon Stoudamire and Dr. Jayant Patel, an Australian physician the media Down Under dubbed “Dr. Death.”

Patel?

Patel was yesterday sentenced to seven years for the manslaughter of James Phillips, 46, Gerry Kemps, 77, and Mervyn Morris, 75. He was also sentenced to three years for the grievous bodily harm of Ian Vowles, whose healthy bowel he removed in October 2004.

Back to the scene:

Horman, who has been in seclusion at her Northwest Portland home since her husband, Kaine Horman, moved out with the couple’s 19-month-old daughter, slipped past the crowd of television and print reporters at the foot of the driveway Wednesday. She returned home around 5:30 p.m. in a silver Volvo sedan with Houze, who got out to open a gate across the gravel road which had been closed for the first time.

Houze declined to answer questions, saying only that the drive was “private property.”

Send for the dogs:

Deputies are using border collies to try to find Kyron Horman. These are not cadaver dogs, rather dogs used to find missing persons.

And not just the deputies dogs:

Search expert Harry Oakes, took to the fields on Wednesday with his border collies in tow to search for the missing Oregon boy, Kyron Horman…

Oakes is the head of International K-9 Search and Rescue and initially offered to help law enforcement search for Kyron. Police declined his help, according to KPTV, but he’s looking for the boy on his own.

No ID – So Panic

The demand for child ID kits has surged to unprecedented levels this year following the disappearance of Kyron Horman, according to child ID Oregon State Police Missing Children’s Clearinghouse.

Oregon State Police Missing Children Program Manager Judy Hayes has confirmed that the interest level is the highest it has ever been during the 11 years that the free child ID kits have been made available to the public. In addition to Oregon, kits have also been sent to Virginia, Michigan, Arkansas, Florida, South Dakota, Rhode Island and even Canada.

The kits are non-intrusive and contain valuable information including a place for a photograph, medical information, personal information, DNA cheek swab sample, fingerprints, dental information and physical description.

Kyron Horman is missing. All eyes are on Terri Horman. She is not an official suspect. But there are no arrests. And – crucially – there is no sign of the missing boy…
