Britain’s Alien Predator Shrimp Beats New York’s Posy Bedbugs

THE Environment Agency warn that the country has been invaded by Dikerogammarus villosus, a ruthless shrimp that kills its prey and then leaves it behind uneaten.

Right now only Grafham Water reservoir in Cambridgeshire is affected. But he shrimps are mobile and have managed to reach Britain from their powerbase in the steppe region between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. As the BBC puts it in sober tones, the shrimp “invaded Western Europe via the Danube”.

The silly season was light on animals – although, granted, we had Mary Bale sticking a cat in a binpuppy tossing girl, and the detonated whale. But there was noting in the water, no sharks or Romanians on li-los.

The shrimp might not be much – 30mm at best. But it is better than the bedbugs infesting New York, which are only 4mm long and can’t speak German…
