Is The Pope Using Anton McManus To Erase The Church’s Cancer?

by | 16th, September 2010

THE Pope is in Scotland. And he’s going to meet Anton McManus, from East Kilbride, South Lanarkshire. Anton is nine. He wrote to the Pope asking him to “help keep his cancer away“. Anton had a tumour on his neck that nearly killed him. He wrote:

“I was really ill and now I am feeling better, even though I can’t do a lot of things my friends can do. I am writing this letter to ask if you could bless me when you come to Glasgow to help keep my cancer away.”

So. Anton will be blessed in public before 65,000 people. But can the Pope keep his cancer away? Can faith keep you healthy? Says Anton:

“I decided to write to the Pope because I thought that, if anyone can help me, God can.”

You’d need a heart of stone not to have hope that Anton lives a full and rich life. And if the Pope can brighten his day, then good.

And you might ask yourself: Does the Catholic Church, mired by its own sickness – the cancer of child abuse – need Anton more than Anton needs the Catholic Church? The sight of a young boy being publicly blessed is not just a PR exercise, is it?

Would the church be that cynical..?
