DRAMA at the world gurning championships at the Egremont Crab Fair, West Cumbria, where female champion 62-year-old Anne Woods’ has collapsed.
Say 12-time male champion and gurning legend Tommy Mattinson (pictured):

I came outside to get some fresh air and Anne was lying on the floor… Being on stage is physically exerting and it also gets very very hot inside the competition room. Anne is getting on a bit now, and this won’t have helped.”

We wish Mrs Woods well. She may wish to revisit the look on her face moments before her collapse for future events.

For those of you not in the know, the Egremont Crab Fair and Sports dates back to 1267.

A highlight is the World Gurning Championships in which contestants push their heads through a horse collar and pull a face.

Contestants may leave false teeth and eyes on and spin them around.

The winner is the person who gets the most applause – or causes spectators to faint…
