Anti-Muslim Bias: Mail Says Muslims Ban Stockport Beverley From Cooking Bacon In Cafe

by | 21st, October 2010

TODAY’S anti-Muslim story arrives via the Daily Mail, wherein we learn about Stockport friar Beverley Akciecek’s predicament at Beverley’s Snack Shack takeaway in the Shaw Heath area:

Cafe owner ordered to remove extractor fan ‘because smell of frying bacon offends Muslims

We learn:

A hard-working cafe owner has been ordered to tear down an extractor fan – because the smell of her frying bacon ‘offends’ Muslims.

That is the hard-worker who put up an extractor fan without planning permission? She applied retrospectively. It was refused.

Anorak has polled Muslims here at the Towers can say that 9 out of ten Muslims are offended by the smell of frying bacon because it seems so bloody delicious. The other Muslim – the 10% – says he has no idea what bacon is but is interested in new cultures and learning more about it.

Planning bosses acted against Beverley Akciecek, 49, after being told her next-door neighbour’s Muslim friends had felt ‘physically sick’ due to the ‘foul odour’.

So. It’s not all Muslims that are offended. The people that aren’t fans of the smell from Bev’s friars just happen to be Muslim.

Councillors at Stockport Council in Greater Manchester say the smell from the fan is ‘unacceptable on the grounds of residential amenity’.

And the fan breaks the rules. And that has nothing to do with Muslims or any other religion.

Mrs Akciecek and her husband Cetin, 50, – himself a Turkish Muslim – work more than 50 hours a week buying, preparing and cooking hot and cold sandwiches and hot-pots for their customers.

One person who cooks the bacon is a Muslim. Got that? Says Bev:

“I just think it’s crazy. Cetin’s friends actually visit the shop, they’re regular visitors, they’re Muslim people, they come in a couple of times a week. I have Muslim people come in for cheese toasties. Cetin cooks the food himself, he cooks the bacon. When we go to a cafe my husband wouldn’t be offended by the smell of bacon. His friends are not offended by it, we have three visitors who come here for a sandwich, friends of my husband, and the smell doesn’t offend them at all. My brother-in-law doesn’t flinch if he comes and we’ve just taken out three trays of bacon.”

But the facts are not that Muslims don’t like the smell – all of them. That is just the Mail’s spin. Only the neighbours’ friends aren’t keen. And the council agrees that the smell breaches the rules. The story has nothing to do with Muslims. Do you see?

And the neighbour’s name? Why, it’s Graham Webb-Lee. That a Muslim name, then?

Mrs Akciecek, who also attended the [planning] meeting, said: ‘He said he had a daughter with an eating disorder, the Muslim friends, and the bad smell all the time is making his clothes smell.”
