Steven Tyler Took American Idol Job To Irritate Aerosmith Bandmates

RUBBER duck faced, No Frills Mick Jagger – Steven Tyler – has been talking about his decision to take the American Idol gig. It seemed a strange decision to stick a supposed wild man of RAWK on the judging panel for a show that, in essence, churns out obedient pop singers, waiting for the zeitgeist to hit them, rather than create it. So, apart from cold hard cash and attention, what were Tyler’s motives? Well, after the rest of Aerosmith threatened to chuck him, and his ridiculous wardrobe, out of the group, he thought to himself that he’d irritate them by being on television all the stinkin’ time. He tells Rolling Stone:

“Did I take this job to show the band? Fuck yeah! Not to show them, but that I can’t be held hostage anymore. I will be my own hostage. The band can’t throw me out.”

Of course, getting a healthy cheque at the end of every month, he has to tow the party line too. And so, instead of dismissing these wannabes in favour of talking about dedicating oneself to The Blues (like all good white rock musicians invariably do), he says:

“You know what, out of the 20 kids you saw tonight, if you could just sprinkle 10 years of smoking pot, getting (messed) up, getting laid, … and 10 years of just life, which one of those people wouldn’t be a star?”

And there we have it! The obligatory mention of drugs and, in Tyler’s addled little mind, he’s back on the credible side of the fence. Well done you.
