Olympic ASBOs are more Beijing than London

LONDON is geting clean for the world’s eyes in this Olympics Year. First they tear down the Occupy London Stock Exchange tents, thus giving the tourists and TV cameras a nice view of St Paul’s Cathedral. Better were the rest of the human world to see genuine protest and democracy in action. It’s getting to be like China:

Beijing’s Olympic chief has ordered a social cleansing operation to clear the city of beggars, hawkers and prostitutes before the start of the event in August. The planned relocation of “problem” residents and businesses is aimed at creating a salubrious image of the Chinese capital in time for the arrival of an estimated half a million tourists, athletes and journalists – Guardian,Wednesday 23 January 2008

Compare that to this:

Last week, a 29-year-old member of a populist protest movement was the first person to be served with a pre-emptive ban, which concerns the upcoming Olympic Games and other national events. The man, Simon Moore, is a supporter of the ‘Occupy’ movement in London. Moore had tried to stop a sporting facility being built on Leyton Marsh, which is a green space near the new Olympic park.

He was charged with a public order offence after refusing a police order to leave the site. After admitting the offence in court, Moore spent a brief time in Thamesmead prison. The interim Anti-social Behaviour Order (ASBO) was requested by Scotland Yard. The ban will prevent him being within 100 yards of any Olympic venue, activity or official… – Contract Law

Non-violent protest is frowned upon in London 2012. It’s not on. What are the authorities scared of? The people? The truth? Show them the Britain we love living in – place where you can make your voice heard and mess the place up a bit. Thsi anodyne crap is painful to see…
