Sky News names Ched Evans’ rape victim as Natasha Massey gets vocal

by | 24th, April 2012

THE story of  Ched Evans rape continues to make waves. The woman raped by the the Sheffield United footballer has had her name broadcast on twitter and Sky News.

When discussing the matter of the woman being named on Twitter, Sky News showed the allegedly offending tweets without redacting the victim’s name. The Mail says Twitter users Jonathan Cox and Joshua Laughton published the woman’s name.

A Sky News spokesperson says:

“In our coverage last night we very briefly revealed the victim’s name despite heavy redaction, and if watching in real-time viewers would not have noticed. We would, however, like to apologise to the victim and her family for any distress caused.”

Too late.

In other news, Evans has been named in the Professional Footballer Association League One Team of the Year. The organisers call this a “footballing judgement” and not a moral one. Indeed. It’s a judgement, as with all these ‘top teams of…’ features it’s meant to be a bit of fun. The inclusion of the league’s top scorer is at once crass and apt. It’s also creates a talking point, which is the sole purpose of the list.

Discuss.

Meanwhile, Ched Evans’ girlfriend – apparently of two-years standing – Natasha Massey, 23, claims the conviction was wrong. The Mail says she has created a “Facebook campaign”.

WE have found “Free Ched Evans” pages with 2 likes and 119 likes. A Facebook page called “Securing an immediate retrial for Ched Evans” has just under 3,000 likes. The organiser – whose name is not instantly obvious (we can’t find it) – has a funny idea as to how the justice system works, imploring users:

Come on guys 500 more tonight we can do it!!

Do what? The page’s admin adds:

just to remind everyone this is a page for support, and any negative posts will be deleted.

Right on!

The Mail says Ms Massey tweeted:

“I am going to fight for Ched. I don’t let go of my soulmate that easily. Bring it on.”

Her mum Susan, of Alderley Edge, Cheshire, tweeted:

“Absolutely devastated. My love goes to Tash and Ched. He is INNOCENT. This is one of the saddest days of my life.”

The Mail bangs on about Natasha Massey’s patents being of money:

She lives with her  parents in a £1.5million property in  Alderley Edge, Cheshire, close to the homes of Manchester United’s Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra.

Blimey! The victim’s life has been damaged. The player has damaged his own life. His lover’s life is damaged. This is a criminal case being turned into a circus, in part due to the readiness of social media to feed a voracious media.

Is it time to look away..?
