Political poster defacer Roman Smetana released from prison

by | 28th, May 2012

ROMAN Smetana was sentenced to 100 days in prison for refusing to serve the terms of his community service order – an order he earned for defacing political posters stuck to buses in the city of Olomouc. The Czech bus driver had added rude comments about the politicians and drawn antennae on their heads. He mostly targeted those politicos working for the center-right Civic Democrats (ODS).

In 2010, the 30-year-old was arrested and handed a community service order. He refused to comply with all of it. He paid the money to make good any damage. But he refused to pay the fine or cede to house arrest. That earned him 100 days jail. After 33 days inside, the authorities let him out.

But who sent him down in the first place ? Why, it was Markéta Langerová, the wife of (ODS) politician and former minister of the interior, Ivan Langer, who originally launched the complaint with police against Smetana.

Now the Czech Supreme Court says he can go free while the court investigates further, mainly to see if the punishment was disproportionate.

One more problem for Smetana is that he was supposed to begun his prison sentence in March but went into hiding until April 21, when he gave himself up. The punishment for evading a prison sentence is anything up to three years.

Sheesh!
