by | 23rd, August 2012

TO Sri Lanka, where French tourists Christina Margarita, George and Emile are in trouble for offending the feelings of Buddhists. The three have been arrested and detained in Galle after a photographic laboratory processing their holiday snaps called the police.

While at the Embekka Devale in Kandy, they has posed for photographs while embracing and kissing a Buddha statue.

The three came up before Galle Chief Magistrate U.S. Kalansooriya , who ruled that they had broken the law and not upheld the “the religious feelings of any class of persons”. He issued fines of Rs. 1,500 each and sentenced them to six months choky with hard labour, suspended for five years.

If kissing and posing is offensive, it’s lucky Buddha is not alive in modern Britain, where his fatness would be ridiculed and cured on Celebrity Fit Club or – heaven forfend – The Biggest Loser.
