Oral sex and unsafe sex are good for your mental health, says Daily Mail

WHEN Eddie Wren told us and Daily Mail readers “Semen is ‘good for women’s health and helps fight depression'”, we grabbed a jug of Fear Factor donkey semen and read more about the healing brain juice:

Oral sex is good for women’s health and makes you feel happier, according to a study which studied the effects of semen’s ‘mood-altering chemicals’.

Not just semen. But swallowing semen as a result of oral sex. Got that? Maybe rapists – for whom the news keeps geting better – an administer the stuff on the national health?

To investigate whether semen has antidepressant effects, the authors rounded up 293 college females from the university’s Albany campus, who agreed to fill out an anonymous questionnaire about various aspects of their sex lives.

Anyhow, big news. Oral sex is an anti-depressive. You might have read that in 2002, when the research was published in Archives of Sexual Behaviour.

* Does semen have antidepressant properties?

In a sample of sexually active college females, condom use, as an indirect measure of the presence of semen in the reproductive tract, was related to scores on the Beck Depression Inventory. Not only were females who were having sex without condoms less depressed, but depressive symptoms and suicide attempts among females who used condoms were proportional to the consistency of condom use. For females who did not use condoms, depression scores went up as the amount of time since their last sexual encounter increased. These data are consistent with the possibility that semen may antagonize depressive symptoms and evidence which shows that the vagina absorbs a number of components of semen that can be detected in the bloodstream within a few hours of administration.

So. Oral sex was neither a question asked nor answered. New Scientist wrote:

In fact, the results aren’t a complete surprise because semen does contain several mood-altering hormones, including testosterone, oestrogen, follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinising hormone, prolactin and several different prostaglandins. Some of these have been detected in a women’s blood within hours of exposure to semen.

The question many people will ask is whether oral sex could have the same mood-enhancing effects. “Since the steroids in birth control pills survive the digestion process, I would assume that the same holds true for at least some of the chemicals in semen,” Gallup says.

So. Unsafe sex is good for you, as the Daily Mail states?

“I want to make it clear that we are not advocating that people abstain from using condoms,” says Gordon Gallup, the psychologist at the State University of New York who led the team. “Clearly an unwanted pregnancy or a sexually transmitted disease would more than offset any advantageous psychological effects of semen.”

The Daily Mail – if you swallow that lot you will end up sick…
