Peterborough family build air raid shelter in garden

MEET the Rands, of Peterborough, Cambridgeshire. They’s built a World War II replica air raid shelter in their back garden. What do they know? What have they heard?

Mrs Rands tells the BBC:

“It’s above ground. We didn’t put it in the ground because they do flood and we didn’t want to ruin what we’ve put in there.”

She says the family – Mrs and Mrs Rands and son Robert – while away the time sitting in their nostalgic extension playing dominoes and having cups of tea.

There’s an app. and a Channel 5 reality show in this. If the Rands get their hands on some tape, rubber bands, felt tips and cardboard, they could relive the personalities of the 1940s. A celebrity would only further its appeal.  David Beckham could pop in and eat a pickled egg while Paul McCartney makes jokes about the lack for fresh fruit and “na-na-na-na-na-na-nanas”. Prince Charles could marvel at the ecologically sustainability of living in a hut.

Living With The Rands is a sure fire hit. If their neighbours or young Master Roberts’ classmates could lob large cooking apples at the family hut to simulate the sound of bombing, then all to the good…
