Malala Yousufzai shot by the obscenity police

by | 9th, October 2012

THE Taliban shot Malala Yousufzai, 14. They shot her in the head (BBC), the neck (Times), twice (Reuters) .  The Taliban struck in Mingora, the main town of Swat which fell under insurgents’ control in 2008. The Taliban tageted Malala because from the age of 11 she her posted an anonymous blog for the BBC’s Urdu website. She wrote  Diary of a Pakistani Schoolgirl under the pseudonym Gul Makai.

The Taliban banned girls from going to school. Malala was outraged.

The men shot as Malala’s bus arrived at the Khushal School and College which her father set up in 1994. Two other girls were injured.

She’s brave. She told the Pakistani magazine Newsline:

“We would wear plain clothes and pretend that we weren’t students…Later when they came to know [about her blog], they told me that I was endangering my life but, still, they were happy that there was someone to speak up for them.”

The FT notes:

Ihsanullah Ihsan, chief spokesman for the Pakistani Taliban, said in calls to the media that the militant group targeted Miss Yousafzai because she generated “negative propaganda” about Muslims.

That would be the Oakistnain Taliban that shoots unarmed schoolgirls? Undaunted by irony, he adds:

“She considers [US] President [Barack] Obama as her ideal. Malala is the symbol of the infidels and obscenity.”

How he hates the obscene.
