TO Maidstone, Kent, where a man with a knife has threatened Taitex Phlamachha and his wife, Asha. The couple had finished work at the Namaste Off Licence in Sandlin. They stopped off at a cash machine. They were on their way home.

The robber pushed Taitex to a wall. He barked: “Hand over the money.” He threatened to knife the couple.

What the thief does not know is that the diminutive Mr Phlamachha was a Gurkha with Maidstone’s 36 Engineers for 13 years. Taitex Phlamachha does not comply. As they fought, Mr Phlamachha tossed his mobile phone to Asha, who called the police. The fight went on for 15 minutes.

No police came.

Says Mr Phlamachha:

“I didn’t realise the knife was in my arm. There was lots of blood and I was in pain but it was only when I got to hospital the blade was discovered inside me.”

Mr Phlamachha managed to fell the robber, who then ran off.

A 39-year-old man from Maidstone has been charged with assault.
