Aberdare pub landlord hid dead body so as not to miss weekend trade

THE Jimmy Savile Fan Club salutes Jason Chidgey, 29, landlord and licensee of Aberdare’s The Boot Hotel.

When Mark Steven Howell, 48, died on the premises from acute alcohol poisoning, Chidgey and cleaner Audra Rees hid the body.

Howell was a sometime worker at the pub. He and Chidgey had fallen asleep in the middle to the pub’s floor. When morning came. Chidgey found Howell dead in the women’s toilets.

Chidgey then hid the body for four days. He got Rees to help.

Why did he do it? As we learn at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court: “He did so to trade over the busy weekend period.”

Says prosecutor Owen Williams:

“From Friday to Monday the defendant carried out his business as if nothing untoward had occurred. He deflected friends’ concerns by saying that he had spoken with Mr Howells recently and that he was okay.”

However, on the day of Mr Howells’ funeral, Rees cracked.

Judge Richard Twomlow jailed Chidgey for 15 months.

Capitalists and pragmatists talk among yourselves. Know that it could have been worse. Chidgey could have taken the body to hospital…
