Oscar Pistorius: a bloody cricket back, Reeva’s cracked skull and a nightie

by | 24th, February 2013

DID Oscar Pistorius murder Reeva Steenkamp? We don’t know. A trial looms. We’ll know more then. But given South Africa’s disregard for anything approaching contempt of Court, we might get it all well before the accused runner takes the stand. The jury could be sworn in, asked for its verdict and the whole thing be over in three minutes flat.

The Daily Mail has news of the cricket bat found at the crime scene:

Pistorius ‘DID beat model girlfriend with a cricket bat’ before he shot her police tell horrified family and relatives have seen her extensive head injuries

Barbara Jones writes:

Olympic sprinter Oscar Pistorius crushed his girlfriend’s skull with a cricket bat before shooting her dead, police have told her family.

How do they know that for certain?

In his sworn affidavit, Oscar Pistorius said he used the bat to smash down the bathroom door.

So. How does the Mail know that the police know that the accused hit Steenkamp in the head? Why not name its source?

Details of the post-mortem examination of South African model Reeva Steenkamp were withheld from last week’s bail application hearing.

Well, yes. Lots of information would have been withheld. Lots more information would not yet have been established.

But grieving relatives who saw her body before Tuesday’s cremation in Port Elizabeth described horrific injuries from the cricket bat, and entry wounds from 9mm bullets fired by Pistorius.

But how does that prove he wielded the bat and then murdered her?

The Mail’s scoop (?) appear to be rooted in a report in South Africa’s City Press, wherein we learnt:

Steenkamp’s skull was “crushed” and police tests on the cricket bat and her body will reveal if the injuries were caused by blows to the back of her head. “There was lots of blood on the bat. Forensic tests will show whose blood it was,” said a source with inside knowledge of the case.

Was that a fact? The City Press also said “Steenkamp was wearing her nightie at the time”. The BBC said she “was wearing white shorts and a black vest”.

Such are the facts…

Reports emerged Sunday that Carl Pistorius is facing charges of culpable homicide for the death of a woman biker who was knocked down in 2010.
