Chelsea players don’t need a manager like Di Matteo, they just need a scapegoat like Benitez

AS Rafa Benitez gets ready to count his redundancy millions, the Mirror’s Oliver Holt reflects on the life and times of another former Chelsea boss, Roberto Di Matteo. Today he writes:

“Benitez versus a squad of players who pretty much won the Champions League by running the show on their own and who are famously independent.”

He says Chelsea are becoming a “laughing stock” under “control freak” Benitez.  Holt called Chelsea a laughing stock back in November 2012:

Chelsea, a club which has won many trophies in the last decade yet still contrived to turn themselves into a laughing stock. Take yesterday, which, let’s face it, was special even by their own standards. First, they announced in the morning that they had appointed Rafa Benitez to replace Roberto Di Matteo, who won the Champions League six months ago.

But Holt says it doesn’t matter to who runs Chelsea. He says players won the Champions’ League pretty much on their own.

So. Do Chelsea even need a manager?
