Daily Mail: Arsenal’s Defence Is The Best But Worse Than That Of Chelsea, Spurs, West Ham And Southampton

NEIL Ashton writes of Arsenal FC in the Daily Mail:

Naming the famous Arsenal back four is easy: Sagna, Mertesacker, Koscielny and Gibbs.

Easy. Done.

It has taken Arsene Wenger years to replace the brilliant defence he inherited when he took over in September 1996. He has finally done it. Whether it is by luck or judgement, he has four defenders who are old school in their approach: they simply do not want to concede goals.

Not conceding goals is what four of the 10 outfield players are all about. Got it. That is how they are judged.

That was the priority in the pre-Premier League days when Dixon, Adams, Bould or Keown and Winterburn were shutting up shop all over Europe.

Ashton then talks of Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny:

“The transformation in these two is remarkable, almost to the point where you cannot believe they are the same two players who were so chaotic in seasons past.”

They were pretty good last season.

Incredibly they must now be considered the best central defensive partnership in England. Seriously, name a defence that can compete with them?

Well, after 10 matches, Arsenal have let in 9 Premier League goals; Chelsea and West Ham United have let in 8 each; Spurs have let in 5; and Southampton have leaked 4.

What must be the hard bit.
