What do you see? Cathy Lynn Grossman, a USA Today writer, sees Nazis:

She’s wrong. She needs to read the small print.

But what do we know of Trail Life? The Associated Press reports:

Chatting in the living room one night, Ron Orr gave his 15-year-old son Andrew a choice: He could stick with the Boy Scouts of America and his mission to become an Eagle Scout, or he could join Trail Life USA – the new Christian-based alternative that excludes openly gay boys.

This was no small decision. Four generations of Orr men had been Eagles, including Ron and Andrew’s older brother. Andrew had spent years working toward Scouting’s highest rank, and was just months from reaching it.

But the Boy Scouts had decided to admit gays, and Ron Orr, a tall, soft-spoken man with a firm handshake, is clear about his Christian faith and what it says about homosexuality: It is a sin that cannot be tolerated.

His son agreed. He would forgo the century-old BSA for Trail Life, which officially launched just last month.

“It felt like I’d be hitting something higher than Eagle in terms of achievement,” Andrew said, in an interview.

Trail Life was founded in 2013 in reaction to changes in the membership policy of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) to allow the participation of openly gay Scouts.

Some key points about the TL:

* Living the Trail Life is a journey established on timeless values derived from the Bible.

* Our vision is to be the premier national character development organization for young men which produces Godly and responsible husbands, fathers, and citizens. – See more at:

* Youth membership in the program is open to all who meet the membership requirements, and is currently designed for biologically male children under the age of 18. The adult applicant must be at least 18 years of age and subscribe to and abide by the statement of Christian faith and the Oath and Creed of the program.

* While the program is undergirded by Biblical values and unapologetically reflects a Christian worldview, there is also a clearly defined inclusion policy for youth. Accordingly, all boys are welcome irrespective of religion, race, national origin or socio-economic status.

So. Anyone can join. Can Muslims and Jews join? Hell, yeah. The chairman is John Stemberger, an Orlando lawyer. He’s got to be a Jew, right?

No. He’s not a Jew.

What else?

All adults in leadership roles—whether staff or volunteer at any level—must agree to sign and adhere to the Statement of Faith. Youth members are not required to sign this statement.

Statement of Faith

We believe there is One Triune God – God the Father; Jesus Christ, His one and only Son; and the Holy Spirit – Creator of the universe and eternally existent. We believe the Holy Scriptures (Old and New Testaments) to be the inspired and authoritative Word of God. We believe each person is created in His image for the purpose of communing with and worshiping God. We believe in the ministry of the Holy Spirit, Who enables us to live godly lives. We believe each of us is called to love the Lord our God with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength, and to love our neighbors as ourselves. We believe God calls us to lives of purity, service, stewardship and integrity.

And it only accepts males. These boys get to make the “Manhood Journey”:

The Orrs and others in Trail Life say they are fighting for the traditional values of Christianity and of Scouting, which includes a command in the Scout Oath to be “morally straight” – even as a changing America grows more accepting of gays and gay marriage. They are leaving an organization central to many of their upbringings with heavy hearts, but also with the belief that the Scouting they knew no longer exists.

“As Christians from a scriptural basis, we love all folks, but the Scripture is very clear that being homosexual is a sin,” Ron Orr said in an interview. “We’ve got to be able to hold a strong line and set a consistent example for our young men.”

This might not be all bad for America? When the big fight comes, it will be between the scouts.

Right now, Russia’s Nashi Kids  and Canada’s Camp Okutta’s ankle-biters are preparing for war. Don’t believe us:

Meanwhile, all we can do is wait and give full throat to Lord Robert Baden-Powell’s tribute to manhood. And he wrote Scouting for Boys. Get ready to stamp your heavy boots, boys.
